Discovering Hayling Island Seaside Railway

22nd August 2012

I first happened upon this railway in August 2012 whilst looking for my next photography project. My first impression when I met Bob Haddock (who runs the railway) and his colleague Rob, was that this was a fun place to be. Upon seeing my camera, a Usain Bolt pose was instantly adopted leaving me to quickly capture the moment.
I was made to feel very welcome and upon hearing that I would like to base my photographic project on the railway, I was offered access to all areas.

I soon learned that the railway was run by volunteers of all ages and abilities. Bob told me that the railway and engines were maintained by all who worked on the railway. Volunteers could have lessons on driving the trains and partake in the mechanics and engineering that was required. Bob also told me that they needed to move the shed to a different location and they are working on plans for a new shed.

This sounded like a great place where people who spanned the generations could work together towards a common goal. I decided then and there that this would be an on-going photographic project where I hoped to capture the spirit of the Hayling Island Seaside Railway.
